The 4 C's of Diamond Quality

The 4 C's of Diamond Quality

The 4Cs are a set of objective and widely accepted standards used by jewellers to evaluate diamonds.

Cut

  • A diamond cut refers to the proportion, symmetry and polish of a diamond.
  • The Cut is considered a diamond's most important characteristic and the only property of a diamond that is man-made.
  • A well-cut diamond reflects light internally from one facet to another and disperses it through the top of the diamond.
  • The facets of a well-cut diamond are arranged with precise, mathematical proportions to maximise its fire, scintillation and brilliance.
  • In general, the grades used to determine the cut of a particular diamond are: “Ideal”, “Premium”, “Very Good”, “Good”, “Fair” and “Poor”.

Carat

  • The carat is the diamond’s physical weight measured in metric carats. 1 carat = 200 milligrams.
  • Larger diamonds are uncovered less often than smaller ones. Therefore, larger diamonds are more valuable than the equivalent weight of several smaller diamonds.

Colour

  • Usually refers to the presence or absence of colour in white diamonds.
  • A colourless diamond, allows more light to pass through it than a coloured diamond, emitting more sparkle and fire.
  • Only a few, rare diamonds are truly colourless. Thus, the whiter a diamond's colour, the higher its value.
  • Grading colour determines how closely a white diamond's colour approaches colourlessness.
  • The highest rating of "D" for colourless and all the way to "Z" to grade stones with traces of very light yellowish colour.

Clarity

  •  The clarity of a diamond refers to the amount, size, type and location of inner flaws (inclusions) or surface imperfections (blemishes) visible in a diamond using 10x magnification.
  • Diamonds with no or few inclusions and blemishes fetch a higher price because they are rarer.
  • Grades range from “Flawless” (F) for diamonds which are completely free of blemishes and inclusions to “Included 3” (I3) for diamonds with large blemishes and inclusions that are visible to the naked eye. The grade may also indicate whether the inclusion is near the centre of the stone or along its girdle, or outer edge.
  • Although the presence of inclusions and blemishes lower the clarity grade of a diamond, these characteristics make each diamond unique as no two diamonds are exactly alike.
  • Observe your diamond's unique clarity characteristics with the plot provided on the diamond certificate to ensure that the diamond you pay for is the same diamond you receive.

Certificate

  •  A diamond certificate, also called diamond grading report, diamond dossier, or diamond quality document provides details of the diamond's exact measurements and weight, its cut and quality as well as all its individual characteristics.
  • The diamond is evaluated, measured, and scrutinized using trained eyes, a jeweller’s loupe, a microscope, and other industry tools by an independent diamond grading and certification laboratory.
  • A diamond certificate isn't an appraisal but a scientific blueprint of the diamond's exact qualities.
  • A diamond certificate from a reliable and reputable diamond grading and certification laboratory assures that every important factor about the diamond is described in the certificate.
